Composition
Botulinum toxin type A is available in dosage units of 50, 100 and 200. Each vial contains 50 units (U) Clostridial botulinum toxin type A, a stabilizer: human serum albumin 0.25 mg and sodium chloride (PE ) 0.45mg.
Applications / Indications
Botulax is not just like cosmetic botox, botulinum toxin type A can be used to treat benign essential bleparspasm in adult patients, treat equinus foot deformity with cerebral palsy for children aged 2 years or older. Botox or botulinum is best known for improving severe glabellar lines in adults between the ages of 18 and 65. Bi-botulinum vials can be stored in the refrigerator for 24 months.
Dosages
For blepharospasm, an initial dose of 1.25 to 2.5 U (0.05 ml to 0.1 ml volume at each site) is recommended, injected into the medial and lateral pretarsal sockets of the upper eyelid and in the preocular – orbicular tarsus of the lower lid.
For pediatric cerebral palsy, a total dose of 4U/kg body weight is recommended for affected gastrocnemius muscle in hemiplegic patients.
In case of diplegia, the recommended dose is 6U/kg body weight divided between both legs. The total dose injected should not exceed 200 U/patient at a time.
For glabellar lines, 20U can be injected but the dosage varies depending on the client’s presentation.
Effects
In blepharospasm, you can appreciate the results in 3 days, seeing the most appreciable results after 2 weeks. For cases of pediatric cerebral palsy, improvement may be noted within 4 weeks of injection. For glabellar lines, it is not possible to accurately predict the timeframes to see the most appreciable results due to the usually personalized dosages.
Precautions
At the injection site and beyond the injection site, fatigue, muscle weakness, diplopia, ptosis, dysphagia, dysphonia, dysarthria, urinary incontinence and breathing difficulties may rarely occur. Botulinum type A should not be given to patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients in the ampoule.
In case of overdose
In case of overdose, effects may not occur immediately, so it is advisable to check the patient for muscle weakness and/or paralysis for a few weeks after the onset of side effects. An anti-toxin is available but the caution with anti-toxin is that it will not reduce already noticeable effects.
